Desert Ironwood is the wood that comes from the Olneya tesota, a Sonora Desert tree commonly referred to as ironwood (palo fierro in Spanish). This slow-growing, important shade tree is found in northwest Mexico and the southwest U.S. The wood it produces is so dense that it lacks air bubbles and sinks in water.

The art of ironwood carving originated with the Seri people of Sonora, Mexico, many years ago, and continues to this day. They use only naturally fallen branches that are cured for at least three years, as live ironwood is never harvested for this purpose. The wood is almost impossibly hard to work and takes special tools and a great deal of patience to carve. Each finished piece is more of a sculpture than a carving. After crude shapes are chiseled out, the artist brings the piece to life by carefully shaping and adding detail with special blades. The figures are then sanded, buffed, and polished to an amazingly smooth finish that lets the intricate grains and subtle color variances show through.

The brand pasohn ironwood was born a few years ago with the purpose of promoting the crafts made by the hands of the artisans of Sonora, where the desert meets the sea. The mission is always to sell quality products, which is why the pieces for sale are few and each one is unique in shape and color. These handcrafted items are created by talented artisans from the Sonora desert.

One of the products, the chiltepinero, allows you to crush/grind peppers, chili/chile piquin/chili tepin or chiltepin, or other spices, and it also looks great as a decoration in the kitchen. This unique and beautiful way to grind small dried peppers is a testament to the skills of the artisans. Each piece is carved with varying shape, color, and grain, making each one unique. There may be natural imperfections in the wood, which also adds to the unique character of each piece.

The product size is approximately 2 x 2 x 3.15 inches.
